And I'm angry. No domesticated animal should suffer such a fate. We, the humans, we take these animals to be our companions and it is our duty and our responsibility to care for them for their entire lives. Not just when they are convenient. Pets are not disposable, not that you could generally tell from today's society. You know if this is the way the world is going, I'll be getting off now thanks.
The number of dogs that come into rescue for petty reasons is appalling, no more so than the old dogs that are dumped at shelters because their owners don't have the balls to do what is right. If you don't have the ability to dedicate 10 - 15 years of your life to the care of your pet, don't bother. It would makes the lives of those in rescue so much easier.
I know what I'm talking about because in the midst of the battle for Otto there came to be Mickey Rooney.
How does a dog come to be like this? Well apparently while the rest of the family dogs were safe and happy indoors Mickey, for unknown reasons, was in an outside run that was too small for him and had no shelter. Yes, in Ohio where it is far too cold for a Boxer to be living outside.
Mickey's owners agreed to surrender him to rescue in order to avoid facing animal cruelty charges. As my mom said "oh? we can't put them in a cardboard box and not feed them for a month?" Poor Mickey only weighed 47 lbs.
He is in a foster home now, he's been vetted which tells us that he's heartworm negative (yay!) and relatively healthy save for his "cherry eye" which will be repaired when he is neutered. You can see it below.
Mickey Rooney is about two years old and like Otto Greater Ohio Boxer Rescue has stepped up to take on the challenge. Mickey is a young dog and with any luck he will pull through. So I guess if everyone could redirect their good health vibes to Mickey it would be really great. In the meantime he'll be getting healthy and learning that life can be so much better than it was.

We will send Mickey all our prayers and blessings his way. Hopefully he will get better soon and finally have the life he so richly deserves.
ReplyDeleteAww, what a sweetie, how could anyone be so horrible to him. At least the suffering is over and there will be no more unbearable cold and empty food bowls. I hope he finds the most wonderful forever family to love him.
ReplyDeleteAnger ... that's the word for it. My son, Clay, who adopted two wonderful Boxers from GOBR pretty much fell apart when he found out about Otto Moby Gordon. Now, there's Mickey Rooney ... yet another example of how many human beings behave. Best of luck to Mickey Rooney ... may you heal physically and emotionally! All great vibes are headed in your direction.
ReplyDeleteAnd a special thanks to GOBR - you do such incredible work!
Amen, I could go on and on and on and never say enough about HOW do people do this!?! But thank you for saving him, I know what it means to Mickey and I'm sure like others if I could I would want them all to be saved and loved....
ReplyDeleteI hope I never understand the side of human nature that makes them treat vulnerable, living beings this way.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that OMG had love and caring people around him for his last days. Prayers headed your way for Mickey Rooney for a quick recovery. I am so happy he will not have to go through HW treatment. It is awful for them. Loved seeing all the pictures, specially the one that was posted last. That IS the way it should be.

RIP OMG. Poor, Mickey! How in the world did they decide to take care of some of their pets and ignore another? That is crap! I also do not think it is good that they were able to give the dog up and not face criminal charges. I would hope that they have some sort of punishment.
ReplyDeleteI have 9 year old Daisy, who I fostered and then adopted last fall. And I have Luke. rescued 3 years ago. While they have unique challenges (they ARE Boxers, after all) I can not imagine cruel treatment towards either of them. Once you join my pack, you are in. And they know it! Run FREE, OMG, and best wishes for Mickey. I had Rebel, my senior rescue boy, for a short 2.5 months last summer. Though our time was short, the love he gave and got was the most intense and moving I have experienced. Rescue a Boxer! There are more than enough to go around, sadly!
