Brave Boxer

Another one of our special BML dogs today, one of the special courageous ones.

"Fenway will be six in September.  I adopted him when he was about 9 months old. He weighs about 40 lbs. He was found beside a road in a southern state and they think he had laid there 3 or more days.  He was put on antibiotics and the mangled leg amputated.  He should have been fine and gotten up, but didn't.  Over a week later they did an x-ray and found that he had a broken femoral hip on the other side as well as a broken pelvis!

Second Chance was getting another dog from that shelter and when asked, we said "send him".  So he came to Maine and a couple of weeks later I became his foster home. No-one asked about him, and no-one could see beyond the missing leg.  I adopted him knowing he might eventually need wheels, but not too worried.

My girl Rose became his "physical therapist" and he became a normal boxer, if there is such a thing. He uses his front end for power and jumps into the recliner, when it is vacant.  He runs and plays with little problem, has conquered my kitchen floor for the most part, and his only problem seems to be ice.  The "hip-less" leg is used for balance but has no strength. Right now the dog yard has some very icy paths and the dogs all tread lightly and slowly.  Fen doesn't go far off the deck and is well aware that he might have problems getting back to the deck.  When he does venture forth, he gets into the snow so that he can move about.  There is no way that I can sand it out there but we are expecting a storm over the weekend and maybe it will help things.

He is a very sweet and loyal guy, and frequently is my shadow."

Sweet little face
Legs aren't needed for dinner.

This is a "pick-on-Sam" deal.  Sam is my senior boy, now 10 and the white girl is Rose who will be 7 in March.  As you can see, Fenway doesn't have much problem.

  6. What a wonderful story on Fenway. He is quite a dog, but then he is a Boxer. I am happy that you adopted him, Dot as no one would have looked at him, I don't think. Thanks for sharing him and the other two with us.
