Growing Up Showing

On to something fun and cheerful today. A little more of Jordyn.

Jordyn has been handling show dogs since she was seven. Here's the story as explained by her Honey (grandmother):

She had just turn 7 but had been begging me since she was 5. At the time I was fighting to get my disability and did not have a lot of money so I sold my jewelry to buy her a puppy. Jordyn and I sat down and looked at all kinds of dogs she might be able to handle and we thought a min Daux would be little enough for her. So for her 7th birthday she got her show puppy!! This is what she said!! "Honey I knew you would get me my show puppy, Mommy and Daddy said you wouldn’t." She threw her arms around me and told me how much she loved me and how she was going to win lots of ribbons. All the time that I would not let her show she would go home and practice showing and stacking  on her pug-poo.

What could I do?? I had made a promise and I keep my word!! The only thing I did not sell was my wedding band and engagement ring.

Jordyn in the ring with Phoebe and keeping her promise to her Honey by taking Reserve Winners Bitch.

Unfortunately Phoebe did not turn out to be show quality she is a little high in the rear end, but that's how Honey ended up with a mini Daux and then Jordyn proved that she can handle Boxers.

Four years later Jordyn is 11 years old and she's now handling in the ring against adults and in the words of Honey "kicking all their butts". Seriously, because here she is getting her first Boxer points when she took her buddy Stanley for Best Opposite Sex and Best of Winners. And those feathers? That's now her signature and she has her own wardrobe of show suits.

In Memory - MsZoee

Last month I posted about a BML member's efforts to improve the quality of life of his beloved MsZoee. Unfortunately this was not to be and MsZoee has made her way to the Rainbow Bridge. Her "dad" is sharing the card he made in her memory for her vet.

Hello Sophie

The message I received with these photos was:

"Here are a couple of pictures of Sophie for the blog. I also included my favorite picture of Annie - perhaps you could put her picture up as well?"

Well of course I can!

Sophie, our beautiful, sweet Sophie.
Murphy has got a great look for his new sister … not quite sure what to make of her, but he likes her!

Annie McDilda, newly running free at the Bridge. (RIP pretty lady)

Brindle On the Road

In the last eight months or so the Brindle has been in four different countries on two different continents. He's been on an airplane and came through like a trooper.

His most recent trip we made the big drive from Ontario down to Florida and even though he's not a big fan of the car he once again proved what a good boy he is.

He asked that I share some of his trip.

We left on Hallowe'en.

Things We Do - Yarn Edition

Today I'll follow up with the theme of hobbies that our beasties get involved in, intentionally or not. This time it's our own infamous Brindle who has often helped me out with photo sessions involving my knitting.

I'd like to include a shout out to one of my favourite independent yarn dyers. The second photo is of a yarn from Haldecraft HandDyed and it's maker creates some of the most glorious colours you could ever imagine.

Not thrilled to be modelling.
Mama always says don't touch the yarn.

Getting better at modelling.
This one was for our little German friend.

BML Family

I recently had a request from a BML member who was having problems sending to the list. The problem turned out to take a little longer to troubleshoot than normal so I ended up forwarding his request to the list. As always the BML stepped up.

At issue was that he was looking for assistance on locating wheels for his Ms Zoee, an 11 year old white Boxer who is suffering from weakness in her back end. This is something that is more common than we would like so the knowledge, and help, is out there.

He was able to come up with a plan and in thanks sent along some photos of Ms Zoee, Kody and baby Maggie. He tells me the photos of Zoee were the hardest to get because she sticks so close to his side he can't take the photo.

At the end is a short video of Ms Zoee and as her "dad" says "you can't tell me she doesn't have gumption and grit".

Still Winning

I confess, I have my favourite blog subjects and today I get to share one of them again, Ms Jordyn.

This is a photo of Jordyn and her buddy Stanley going Best Junior Handler at the Greater Humble Kennel Club Sunday Oct 6,2013. Honey is very proud of them both.

I love Jordyn's smile and the feathers in her hair.

Healing a Heart

It's the way of Boxers. When you lose one the time comes when you need another to help finishing the healing and maybe as a tribute to those who have gone before. Such was the case with Bella's mom and she has now adopted a petite lady by the name of Ruby.

Ruby has settled in to her new home and is enjoying life.
We stopped at a friend's house on the way home from being adopted and she took this picture.  Ruby was perfect in the car.
Enjoying one of her fav things to do, the boxer scootch!

She does not know how to play with toys but does enjoy the chew bones.

In Memory - Beautiful Bella

When someone asks me to do a memorial blog for their Boxer I will always say yes but I ask them to write it because they know the story best.

*****

I lost Bella on Sept. 16th.  I took her to a specialist on the 13th for an ultrasound which revealed a   huge tumor.  I brought her home for the weekend knowing that it would probably be our last time together.  On the 16th our vet started surgery and the tumor was so invasive the kindest thing I could do was release her from her suffering and send her to the bridge.  Even if he had been able to remove the tumor she would only have had a short time and it would have been pain filled and miserable for her.  When I dropped her off at the vet I think she knew it would be the last time she would see me.  When the tech took her leash Bella kept coming back to me which was very unusual for her she was always happy to see everyone at the vets office.  I kept giving her kisses and telling her I loved her.  I always called her my angel dog as she rescued me as much as I rescued her.  I miss her so very much, she took a huge piece of my heart with her.  She was truly my Heart dog.

Bella, my beautiful girl, I was so blessed to have you in my life for 5 years.

Not the Sports Fans

The BML co-admins were laughing recently over something we have in common. We watch football... our dogs don't. Proof? Of course!

Things We Do - Beads

A recent topic on the BML was "what hobbies do we have" which in typical Boxer lover fashion end up being Boxer related. Here's the first installment.

When I started beading I decided to do some dog portraits and practiced on my dogs at the time, Goalie and Zito.  I have done others, and larger and a couple of bracelets. The outcome is completely dependent on the original photo I have at hand to work from. I had one pal send me a photo of her dog and she said she'd publicize my work, but she sent a picture that was totally blurry and unworkable. Anyway, my beading expanded to orchids, butterflies, and any other thing that catches my eye.

Resilience

Today I am inspired to share some special dogs with you. Not Boxer Mailing List dogs but Boxer Rescue Canada dogs. Velvet, Gunner and Mercy live in High River, Alberta which was devastated by flooding this summer. As their town and family recover they are a source of solace, comfort and often humour to help in their own way. Here's a bit about them.

***********************************************

The white boxer with brown ear is Gunner, he will be 2 in October. The other white boxer is Velvet. Both came to us from Boxer Rescue Canada.

Gunner was a puppy and came right from the breeder, who we are still in contact with, but it was facilitated by BRC. He is sweet and goofy and funny, so full of love. He has an amazing connection with my oldest son. He really seems to get Aaron's aspergers and can pick up on his moods quite well.

Velvet came to us when she was 3ish. She's now 7ish. She is a sweet sweet girl, unless you are another dog. She's always been very motherly to our boys (Aaron and Adam both have aspergers). Velvet is my best friend. She comforts me and looks after my boys, when they play outside, I let Velvet out to watch over them and she does an amazing job. She was a breeding dog until they were done with her and she has maintained that motherly instinct. She is my constant companion. I never have to look far and there she is.

Mercy, the little white boston terrier/french bulldog is such a sweetie. Having just gone through this flood and we just lost our pug right before that, my sons absorb everyone's emotions. They are feeling our entire town's emotions right now and they don't understand how to disperse all or any of that sometimes. We were missing our DeJa (pug) and needed to help the boys too, we needed some Mercy. And she's helped us all
