Paris-Ivy & Benito Santiago

Maryann sent me some photos along with the following description.

Benito Santiago came for a play date again.  He and Paris-Ivy were busy, busy, busy!  And these photos clearly show that Boxers have the BEST expressions!  Some of them make me laugh right out loud.  Benito's dad said he wants to do a slide show, zooming in on his dog's "crazed" face and caption it:  "My Chidren's Puppy."  And then wait to see how fast someone reports him to Child Protective Services.

Okay, Big Boy ... let's get it on!!
Oh, boy, this Boxer Chick is tougher than I thought.
Benito, you must learn not to underestimate the power of the female!

ACK!!!  Paris-Ivy!! You lost one of your eyebrows!!

You dummy, I only had one to begin with ... and now you're gonna see it up close and personal!

to be continued...

Max's Playdate

A while back Max and I had some visitors. Andy Waterhouse managed to add our place to his vacation itinerary while he was in France from the UK and of course Timmy and Ben were with him.

It's a good thing I have such a  large garden because the three boys needed some running room. And I even remembered to bring the camera out!

Andy introducing Max & Ben, Max liked Andy better.

Max and Ben stop for a beverage break.

Timmy waiting his turn at the trough.

Max telling Ben the good spots in the garden while Timmy's busy.

Somedog tired out my Max!

Timmy on the patio. Love his tail!

Tango's Disgust

Today a photo from one of our favourite BML storytellers, Janet Giarratano.

I am sending a pic of Tango.

This  is a picture of her  today when Rubin made the mistake of peeing on her as she was outside peeing. She was so mad at him she came inside right away and got in the shower.

The look on her face says it all.

Poor Tango in the shower.

Doggie's Herding Style

The "Why Yes, Boxers Can Herd" post last week led to some conversation on the subject. Deb Franks sent the following:

"Doggie has been our main sheep dog since we have had sheep.

As for rounding up the sheep...well I do not need a dog for that. I just call them and they come running.

She excels at helping catch & hold when we shear and trim the feet. I have yet to meet a dog as good as her at that part of sheep work.

I have high hopes for CBGB taking over this job, hopefully in the next month Doggie will be training him.

Katie is OK, getting better each year but she is jut not as forceful as needed with the sheep."

The interesting thing about Deb's email is that Katie's the Sheepdog X in the bunch, Doggie is a Boxer X and CBGB a Rhodesian Ridgeback X.

Not long after sending that email to the BML, Deb sent me the following:

"As you can see - she displays speed! Agility! Cunning! She is the hardest working sheep dog/boxer on the planet."

Folks, here you have it, Doggie demonstrating her particular style of herding.

Thinking back... Spencer

Today I'm taking the blog back for myself, for a special reason. April 22nd, is the twelfth anniversary of a particular Boxer having come into my life.

His name was Spencer and he was a very special White Boxer. He came to me, thanks to Marta Nettlefield of Boxer Rescue Canada, all the way from California. He was meant to have arrived a little earlier than he did but he missed his connection in Philadelphia. Later, as I came to know him, I realized that he must have conned someone into letting him visit the duty free.

The idea had been to bring home a prince for Kate, little did I know that she was getting the court jester instead. He wasn't so handsome when he arrived, he had mange and he was pink. My vet's first thought was "what have you done". But a few months of good food, lots of love and regular baths and he was turned into the most beautiful boy.

He was only eight when he left me, with a huge hole where he had been. My only conclusion? They needed a greeter at the Bridge and his reputation for welcoming any and all species, especially babies, most definitely preceded him.

Here are a few of my favourite photos of my my sweet boy Spencer, or as my niece called him, the White Spotted Goof.
My silly guy, you can see here that both his bottom canines are gone.

Doing the Boxer thing with Max.

Run Spencer! I have no idea where he's going but he's about to hit the house...
Snoozing with his girl, Kate.
My handsome guy.

Calming Collars III - Kelly Ann

The last report on the Calming Collars comes from Julia Orrell. In her words:

I have attached a photo of Kelly Ann wearing her calming collar.  It seems to be working well for her.  We are not having any thunder today, but there are people shooting out back of our house.  Kelly is still very much aware of the noise, but she is not frantically scratching at the back door to get in.  She is LOOKING at the back door though.  This is the only product/medication/therapy that has given her any relief from her phobias.  The collar has a strong odor to it, but I can't really say it's an unpleasant odor.  I'm glad to have finally found something that really works for her.

Calming Collars II - Willie B

Number two on the subject of Calming Collars. Willie B is Rachel Osborn's Guide Dog so it's very important that he be able to focus on his job and not worry about outside stressers. Rachel says she has already noticed a difference when they go out in how Willie B handles strange noises.

Calming Collars I - Mack and Alice

Calming collars were a subject of choice a week or so ago on the BML. These collars, infused with  natural herbs, are meant to help dogs better manage stressful situations.

In our first of three on this subject we get to see Laurie Watson's Mack and Alice. Here's what Laurie had to say:

Not sure what time the mailman came by, but my mailbox sure does smell nice now!

I think Mack just doesn't have the energy to spend trying to get the collar off since he's still not feeling quite up-to-snuff.  Mack just keeps scratching at the collar.   Alice, on the other hand, has been scratching at it, and rubbing on the floor and the furniture trying to get it off.

Jordyn, Open Junior

Some of you may recall my previous post about Jordyn and Montana. Well it seems they've done it again because here's what Pride had to say in her email to me. In case anyone has forgotten, Jordyn doesn't call Pride grandma, or any version of that word, she calls her Honey.

Here is another picture of Jordyn and Montana in a field of Blue Bonnets at Indian Paint Brush. Jordyn and Montana had just won Open Juniors at the Brazos Valley Kennel club on Sunday April 1, 2012!

My wallet was $15.00 lighter after the show because I told Jordyn if she won I would buy her the new lead she has been wanting for Montana. So the little bugger went in, kicked butt and won! What’s a Honey to do but pay up!!!

Beautiful picture Pride!

Why Yes, Boxers Can Herd.

Today is a special treat from Vicki Bremner, I'll let her explain.

Hi Carrie - up to now I haven't posted to the BML, but I read everyone else's posts every day.  I'm attaching a couple pictures of my girl "Xena" (Stone's Absolut Intoxication) from last Sunday's AKC sanctioned herding trial/herding instinct test put on by the Boxer Club of San Fernando Valley in Escondido, California.  The judge says Xena exhibits herding instinct... at this point it's hard to differentiate that from hunting instinct, as you'll see in the photos :)  She sure had fun though!

These are great! (note: the captions are mine :D)

I'm ready... You want me to what???
Ok, if I get going really fast...

I'll catch it!

The New Girl & Dozer

Michele Sullivan is a recent new addition to the BML, along with her little guy Dozer. She sent me some info and photos of Dozer.

Dozer was born 12/24/2011. He is so funny, he just plows his way through everything, hence the name Dozer lol. He's learning "sit". Everyone who meets him falls in love he's just a little butt wiggling clown! I take him to the dog park 2 to 3 times a week and as soon as we get out of the car he knows where he is and can't control himself, the look on his face says "I'm here yay!" I can honestly say he is the best dog I've ever had, and he's still just a pup!!

The ABC's

Today we have a share from BML'r Sunie Ferrington. She tells me that even though they aren't the most recent photos, they are her favourites. Here's what she had to say.

"The photo of The ABC's is about 3 years old and Snugli Cody was when my Cody (now 5) was a baby, didn't have all his puppy shots but had to go on the walk with the rest of the kids!"

I seem to have neglected to ask what the A and B stand for...

Rose, the (Belated) Birthday Girl

I have a special update today. While I was off in the City of Lights a lady that shares my birthday was having her own celebration. Here's what BML'r Dot Burgess has to say about Rose.

Here are two pictures of the lovely and petite Rose. You can see in one picture (the second one) the bells hanging by the door. These she rings when she wants the inner door opened so that she can make use of the dog door. Rose is my 'foster-dog trainer' and is also really the alpha here. I say 'petite' because she is only 50 lbs.

This is a Birthday picture. The Gypsy/Ghost litter is 6 years old today! Gypsy and Ghost were surrendered only a day or two before Gypsy gave birth. Rose was born in Rescue and is one of 9 pups, of which 5 were white.

Supper tonight (March 24) was her kibble which was garnished by her favorite, banana slices. One very happy girl.

Lou and Ella

Why yes, today is a very special treat. Here are Louis Z. and his sister Ella enjoying a nice Wisconsin day. Photos from Diane and captions by Maryann.

Okay, Lou ... whatcha wanna do today?  The weather's great!

I don't know, Ella.  It does seem a shame to waste such a nice day.

Okay, I'm thinkin' about it ... just gimme some time.

Make yer thinkin' quick, Ella ... I'm gettin' bored!

Hey, Lou ... catch my dust!  You're not bored now, are ya?
