Today I received a request from a BML member regarding a dog that is in a shelter. I'll let Kimberly's words explain the rest.
"There
are 2 boxer rescues here in the Dallas area that won’t consider tagging
this boy because they feel he is mix.
I would love to have the BML’s opinion on what they think. I feel
Hercules is 98-100% boxer but I’ve been wrong before! I thought last
night who better to ask than my dear friends who’ve been dealing with
this breed for many years."

Also, they are looking for a potential foster home for this guy, his name seems to be Hercules. He's pretty cute if you ask me.

THAT precious thing is a Boxer! The second picture has Boxer all over it. My Lucy gives that look all the time. If it were me, I'd pull him for sure...

My first glance told me 'of course it's a boxer!' Poorly bred perhaps, but a boxer.
ReplyDeleteAfter studying the photos a bit more and seeing the shape of the head and straight rear legs, lack of under bite, I may change my opinion a bit. He seems to have some dewlap. Possibly American bull dog/boxer mix??? I don't really see pit bull tho.
I would want more info about height and weight. A profile picture of his head. A side photo of his bite so I could see his teeth. That middle pic looks like he's blowing a bubble off his lip : ) and it kinda looks like he has a lump on the lower ribcage.
It be helpful to get a good profile shot of his whole body, sorta like a stacked boxer in a show. I love his attractive checked coat.

I was thinking Amercan Bull Dog as well and told Kimberly as much. I think he's adorable.

Although his thick look & stance may be fear...he looks scared doesn't he? The lack of an underbite makes it hard to say he's a boxer, unless he has one and it's not obvious, maybe he's toothless?
Does he act like a boxer? play like a boxer? jump like a boxer or lunge forward? Does he stand erect? Is he uncomfortable if you stand him erect? Is he vocal?
It pains me to 'label' a dog a mix, for the sake of rescue...and with so many poorly bred boxers these days, I wouldn't want to make that call based on photos alone in his case.

I think mostly boxer with a tiny bit of AB in there. He is one gorgeous boy!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking American Bully as well but those round, saggy eyes say Boxer so maybe a mix? Love that face though!
