I'm a HUGE fan of silver Boxers and have trained myself not to get frustrated when people say they want a "young one" for the kids, or so they can train it, or so they know it, or so they don't inherit bad habits. News Flash People: ALL puppies have bad habits!!!! You have to WORK very hard to fix those, but suit yourself. They say to pick a dog with the same personality traits as you so this is why Silvers suit me:
As for as not wanting to lose them too soon, I consider myself there FOR THE DOG, not the other way around. So if there’s an old Boxer out there that needs a place to live the rest of his life, for a day or a few years, he’s welcome at my house and it’s the least I can do considering what every Boxer I’ve known has done for me. We are now happily on our 3rd silver Boxer.
The first one, Kellogg, was a permanent foster because he came in at age 7 with cancer. Kellogg taught us volumes about mast cell tumors and separation anxiety-he was a double-whammy!He was also mostly toothless and loved kids; we had two fun and crazy years with Kellogg!

What a lucky dog Kellog was to have lived with you!! I too love the old dogs with the "silver" faces. They are beautiful and more suited to my lifestyle :-)
ReplyDeleteI wish more people would give them a chance! I think they would be hooked like us :) Veronica J.
DeleteI have had 3 myself it is really hard to say goodby but it is worth it thay say THANK YOU everyday and make a foot print on your heart that you just cannot forget
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! Veronica J.
DeleteThank you for your great attitude. I tell people it's like being a good parent, you simply have to put aside your feelings sometimes. Yes, it hurts when they die, but the end product, allowing an older dog to live out their lives with dignity in a loving environment, is worth it.
ReplyDeleteI have had several boxers attain senior status with me and yes they were much easier to handle in their senior years but still retained puppy like personalities other than destructiveness. Most of them came to me as puppies or young adults except 2 but 1 I knew well her entire life and came to live with me as a senior but our time together was way too short. After losing 4 to various reasons as seniors I adopted 3 young ones one of which is now 10 y/o. I love the gray faces and may yet adopt another senior down the line when I am strong enough to deal with another loss. They truly are the sweetest babies and deserve good homes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of people don't seem to realize is that they too will get old and sick. They will expect someone to take care of them but yet they can't seem to give the same care and concern to others and animals. Kellogg looks like he was a fine gentleman!
