I'm still working on catching up from last month's festival of busy. In the midst of that I received an email and photos from one of the BML's favourite agility competitors who had a competition mishap. She wanted to share her husband's invention for her. Read on!

My broken ankle was casted Tuesday and I just have to share these
amazing pictures of my nifty knee scooter my wonderful husband built for
me. I am in a non weight bearing cast to just below my knee and
handing a clumsy 66 year old woman crutches and saying "Here you go" is
sheer lunacy.
I started Googling orthopedic things for a non weight bearing foot and
found lots of really expensive things that I needed YESTERDAY. I shared
my Google finds with Charlie and asked if perhaps he might be able
to get a rolling mechanics seat and convert it into what I need. He was
a toolmaker on Mare Island so if he could help build SUBMARINES he
could surely make something for his temporarily one legged wife.
Harbor Freight had exactly what we needed and it was even on sale!
He then proceeded to modify it to fit my needs, bolting on a wooden box
to raise it up to the proper height for my knee, and even carefully
gluing and taping on a piece of foam to make it nice and comfortable. I
told him I am really clumsy and would feel more secure if he could put
some kind of tiller on the front and my golly, he re-purposed a croquet
mallet that hadn't seen the light of day in probably 25 years.
I still can't wait to get this cast off, but my one of a kind orthopedic scooter sure makes life tolerable.
To make this dog related they all barked at it and Rollo even tried to
bite it until I told them this was my helper and I needed it. Now they
are fine with it.
Here is a nice close up of my contraption, and another of my spiffy green cast with my poor purple toes peeking out.
The cast putt'er on 'er allowed me to select the color for my Fiberglas
cast . I chose green because as any performance dog competitor knows
green is the color of your qualifying ribbon.

Is Charlie for hire? ;) And ... green IS the color we all want (at least in performance events) so this will bring you luck!
ReplyDeleteProbably the mileage fees to get him to Phoenix from the San Francisco area would be a bit high :)

You're sooo lucky to have a handy hubby that could build something for you :)
ReplyDeleteJessie, Zoe, & Caddie
I count my blessings every day, not only is he HANDY at making/fixing things, he loves the dogs as much as I do.
DeleteWhat a nifty gadget! Pauline
ReplyDeletemaybe he should patent that!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic {and brilliant} hubby!! Now there's no excuse, you must do as the docs tell you :P I think I'm kinda jealous and want one of my own ... without the foot in a cast, though! :)
ReplyDeleteCharlie should patent the design and sell the plans online. The premade ones cost a fortune. I'm sorry you broke your ankle and needed it. If he made one with bigger all terrain tires and better steering you might be able to continue agility.
